Pictured here is Bishop Tom Gumbleton (center, grey shirt) of Detroit with members of the Southwest Florida chapter of Call to Action. The bishop traveled to Florida to give talks at St. Thomas More church in Sarasota and St. John the Evangelist in Naples. Topics of his talks were the Voice of the Laity in the Church Today and the need for Global Nuclear Disarmament. Between his talks, he took time out to visit with this Call to Action group in a stop at Estero. He made special mention of the cordial welcome he received from the Bishop of Venice, who welcomed him whole-heartedly to this diocese, and he fielded questions of all kinds posed by the CTA group. Throughout the evening he displayed courtesy and respect for his fellow bishops but, at the same time, expressed concern that the current leadership in our church were not following up on the mandates of Vatican II, and that the spirit of collegiality was not being fostered.
Our members were enthusiastic
in their appreciation of the bishop’s visit, and were re-energized
to continue our efforts to make our's a better church and one that
Jesus Christ could recognize as His own.
